The curse of the disciplined is that every day looks the same. The curse of the undisciplined is that every year looks the same. I did not come up with that. But I have felt both.
Discipline is simple. But it is not easy. So instead of doing the thing, we complicate the thing. We look for the trick. The shortcut. We read another book. We ask another person. We chase the angle everyone else missed. We are sure the answer must be hidden somewhere clever. It rarely is.
The truth is usually simple. And because it is simple, we refuse to believe it.
Look at someone in great shape. We decide they must have something we do not. Better genes. More money. More time. Some secret we were never handed. It lets us off the hook, because if the answer is out of reach, there is no point trying.
But the real answer is boring. Find the few things that improve your life. Do them every day. That is it. No trick, no secret, just the same small things, repeated until they add up.
Nobody wants to hear that. A secret feels exciting. Repetition feels like nothing. So we skip the boring thing that works and chase the exciting thing that does not.
Here is how to start, as boring as I promised.
For one week, track your time. Every hour, write down what you just did. At the end of the week you will see your life on paper, exactly how you spend it.
Then pick a goal. If you do not have one, find one first. Nothing here works without it.
Now go through your week and mark each thing. Does it move you toward the goal, or away from it. Cut what pulls you away. If you cannot cut it, shrink it. Then take what moves you forward, and do more of it.
That is the whole system. Repeat it every day, every week, every month.
We overestimate what we can do in a week. We underestimate what we can do in a year. So stop looking for the shortcut. There is not one.
But none of this works unless you are willing to do it. Wanting the thing is not enough. You have to give something up. You have to take the risk. You have to repeat the boring work long after it stops feeling exciting. If you are not willing to do that, do not even start.
