Some things you learn in an afternoon. Others take weeks. Others take decades.
There is learning you choose. And there is learning you don't. I want to talk about the kind you don't.
This kind does not come from reading or studying. It comes from what happens to us. It arrives whether we like it or not. At a time we did not pick. Through a door we never opened. It just finds us.
Grief works this way. So does heartbreak. So does betrayal. So does almost everything that ends up mattering. We do not get to pick when we understand what happened to us. And time finds the strangest moments to teach us. Let me tell you about one.
A man was at a party. In a circle of people, a doctor was describing a strange phenomenon, called terminal agitation. Near the very end of life, he explained, some people change. They become cruel. They hurt the people closest to them. They say things they never would. A rare psychosis.
One man in the circle looked struck by it. He spoke up. He explained to the group he had lived this with his father. On his deathbed, the old man told him he was a disgrace. That he was ashamed to call him his son. That he had always been a mistake. Then he died.
The doctor asked a few questions. How sudden was it. How unlike the man it had been. Then he told him, gently, that this was it. This was the psychosis he had just been describing.
The man went quiet. All those years. So many questions. Why did his father hold that inside. Why wait until the last breath to speak. Where did the hate come from. It hurt so much he had told almost no one. For thirty years he was sure his father had hated him. And now, from a stranger at a party, he understood. It was never about him at all.
You are that person. Right now, this second, you are certain about something you will one day see completely differently. You just do not know which thing it is. The friend who let you down. The rejection you still feel. What you believe about yourself. Or something that makes no sense to you today, and one day will. The son did not know he was wrong. You do not know either.
So do not hold your certainty too tightly. We can never be fully sure of what we know. That includes what you read. This too. Especially this. Let life surprise you. It is going to anyway.
